Juniata/Mifflin County Meltdown

The second annual six week Mifflin County Meltdown, a community wide healthy living tune-up, is scheduled to begin with a bang on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at the Lewistown High School auditorium. Each week after, programs will be held in Juniata County's CJEMS Building, Mifflintown at 7pm. There will be free screenings from 6:30pm to 7pm. The weekly meetings will conclude on Monday, February 14th.

Mr. Pete Thomas is coming to the January 11th meeting to kick off the series. Thomas is the Season 2 at-home winner of NBC's “The Biggest Loser”. He is a full-time motivational speaker, teacher, weight-loss coach and consultant. Presenters for the remaining five weeks will be announced in the very near future.

The 2010 Meltdown assisted 500 participants loose over 3,000 pounds in six weeks with the help of six educational and motivational speakers. It is anticipated the 2011 Meltdown will attract more participation and greater successes.

Tickets for the Pete Thomas presentation are limited to 1,100 seats and will be free. Distribution locations are Curves in Burnham or Mifflintown, the Chamber of Commerce in Lewistown and Corvette America in Reedsville. To guarantee seating it is recommended that attendees pick up advance tickets. The actual seating will be general admission, first come, first served.

1. WHEN DOES IT START? END? Registration night is Jan 11th to explain and make teams. Last session is Feb. 14.

4. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE TEAMS? To raise awareness of the need to take responsibility of one’s health. To become fit, have fun, and as a by-product, lose weight if needed.

5. DO PARTICIPANTS HAVE TO ATTEND EVERY SESSION? WHAT IF A PARTICIPANT HAS TO MISS A SESSION? One person from the team must be in attendance at the first session (11th)to get the team registered. Official participants are eligible for prizes and will be given, upon request, passes to participating fitness centers/gyms, other health info; they can attend sessions based on convenience and personal preference.

6. IF A PARTICIPANT CAN’T ATTEND THE FIRST SESSION, CAN THE PARTICIPANT STILL BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY MELTDOWN? Guests are welcome at all of the sessions, but only registered participants are eligible for prizes.

7. DO ALL THE TEAMMATES HAVE TO ATTEND THE OPENING SESSION, OR CAN ONE OR MORE TEAMMATES REPRESENT THE GROUP? No. A representative from the team must be there to report the teams losses and successes.

8. WHAT ARE THE PRIZES? The most important prize is a more fit you. Prizes donated by individuals and organizations will be announced. Additional prizes will be announced over subsequent sessions as they are received by the event organizers.

9. DO ALL OF MY TEAMMATES HAVE TO EXERCISE IN THE SAME WAY? AT THE SAME TIME? AT THE SAME LOCATION? No. Team members can work out individually or however they want, whenever they want.

10. DO I NEED TO WORK OUT AT A GYM TO PARTICIPATE? No. Exercise comes in many forms….dancing, fencing, walking, and more. We will encourage participants to exercise in ways that are safe and fun and appropriate for each.

11. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO SESSIONS? WILL WE BE EXERCISING? Dress comfortably. We will not be exercising unless you count clapping, laughing or yelling!

12. ARE THERE ANY AGE RESTRICTIONS? Official participants need to be 18 or older. There is no upper limit. We suggest everyone check with their doctor before taking on any exercise program.

13. CAN MY CHILDREN COME WITH ME TO WEEKLY SESSIONS? Yes, as long as they are 12 years or older and won’t disturb others. Only persons 18 or older will be officially registered.

14. CAN MY FAMILY MEMBERS BE ON MY TEAM? Yes, but again, only family members 18 or older will be officially registered.

15. WHAT IF I DON’T KNOW ANYONE WHO WANTS TO BE A PART OF A TEAM? We’ll be matching people with others who need to join a team on the first night.

16. CAN I BE A TEAM OF ONE? OR CAN WE HAVE MORE THAN 5 PEOPLE ON A TEAM? You can be a team of one or have a team of twenty; however, a team of 10 for example, may want to have their best 5 people compete for prizes.

17. DO TEAMMATES HAVE TO BE OVERWEIGHT AND OUT OF SHAPE TO JOIN? NO! Everyone who wishes to focus on fitness is welcome. We expect to have some participants join to support their spouses or other teammates. Others will be addressing issues of flexibility or strength.

18. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE COMMUNITY MELTDOWN IS OVER? We’ll work together to find ways to continue our focus on fitness.

19. DO I HAVE TO TELL PEOPLE WHAT I WEIGH? Your team captain will need to know at the beginning and then again each week. Otherwise, we can’t measure the losses and give prizes.
